Figurative sculptures

Wednesday 2nd October - Friday 4th October 2024

SUMMARY

We are very lucky to have Jenny Chan with us for a three-day figurative sculpture workshop in October 2024. Jenny was born in Hong Kong but is now based in Warwickshire.

During this workshop students will learn to create a tabletop figure and a wall hanging mask.

THE COURSE IN DETAIL

Jenny will guide students in the creation of their own palm size wall mask and a half-body figure sculpture in this three-day course.

On day one students will learn to prepare clay slabs and will be shown various joining techniques. The form of the head and body of their tabletop figure will be created using templates from the clay slabs to create drape moulded forms. Creating the facial proportions and the process of sculpting a face will be broken down step by step. Students will then start to sculpt the faces for both the mask and the table piece on the first day.

On day two students will continue to sculpt the faces of both their mask and tabletop figure. Students will then add a backing to their mask and will assemble their head to the body of their tabletop piece.

Students will be shown a variety of techniques to create their own unique design - creating textures, clay knitting, creating shapes from cutters and moulds, adding various attachments etc.

On day three students finish their pieces, refining the shapes, smoothing the surface and then decorating with coloured slips  and underglazes.  Jenny will help students to bring their sculptures to life at every step throughout the process.

The course is aimed at any level of ceramics or sculpting ability; some knowledge of ceramics would be helpful but not essential.

Please note, there will be a small additional firing charge for final pieces. Please see our Student Contract (below) for details.
