Wire Animals

Tuesday 3rd December 2024

Summary

We are very excited to have James Ort returning to the studio to deliver his popular Wire Animals course in 2024. With James’ guidance and support, students can make any animal of their choice. This is a creative workshop accessible to all, regardless of ability or experience and uses simple materials so students can easily continue their practice at home.

The course in detail

This inspiring and practical one-day workshop will teach students free-form wire sculpture techniques. Students are welcome to make any mammal, bird, fish, amphibian, reptile, insect or crustacean of their choice. James will be on hand to guide and advise every step of the way.

Wire is a fantastic medium to work in – it can be surprisingly pliable and easy to manipulate and at the same time it can be assembled in ways that bring great strength and rigidity. This makes creating very dynamic forms a reality - something that is not always easy with most sculptural mediums. James describes sculpting in wire like “drawing in air!”

This intense, one day course will see James give students an introduction to creating animals in wire. He will focus on symmetry, flow and form, and will talk students through the principles of how he works and will guide students to find a way of working that suits them.

Each student will receive plenty of individual attention as well as continued advice and guidance from James.

About James

James is a wildlife artist and his work has been exhibited in local and national exhibitions. James is known for his creations in clay, wire and mixed media, as well as his paintings and drawings.

He discovered sculpture when he became manager of the Phoenix Studio – an art school in Oxfordshire. Having a lifelong fascination with wildlife and a former career in conservation, James uses his understanding of anatomy and form to push ceramics to its limits. He teaches sculpture and is passionate about using his art to benefit others – be it wildlife or mankind. James was very much inspired and influenced by his nature loving Grandfather, Brian Price Thomas who illustrated a number of the Ladybird Children Books.
