The story behind the studio
“I really do think that ceramics is life enhancing and would recommend it to everyone.”
The Ceramic Studio opened its doors in September 2014, founded by Rani, whose love for clay had been growing for many years. After moving to Tonbridge with her young family, she began a City and Guilds Pottery Course at the Adult Education Centre, where she spent seven years refining her skills. Along the way, she attended specialist residential courses, including La Meridiana in Tuscany and Richard Phethean’s Intensive Throwing Course, both of which helped shape her practice. What began as an exploration of decorative ceramics evolved into a passion for creating functional pieces to be enjoyed in everyday life.
From this passion came the idea for The Ceramic Studio: a dedicated space where others could discover the same joy and fulfilment that pottery brought Rani. Today, the studio offers a wide range of classes covering every aspect of ceramics, in an environment that is welcoming, well-equipped, and inspiring. At its heart is the belief that working with clay is life-enhancing, a chance to switch off, get creative, and leave the everyday behind.
Meet the Team
-
Rani Moss
FOUNDER
Rani has always loved art, developing a particular passion for ceramics in her early 20s. While working in fashion and living in Hackney, she was inspired by London’s creative galleries and artists.
A beautiful contemporary bowl, gifted by Andrew her husband during a difficult pregnancy, became a major inspiration. It sparked Rani’s desire to create beautiful, handmade art. From that moment, Rani knew she wanted to make ceramics that could bring joy and wonder to others.
