Grace BIRKETT Kenrick

One-Day Introduction to Glaze Making

30th September 2027 | 1 Day Workshop | £100

This comprehensive introduction to glaze making provides students the tools and understanding to begin developing glazes tailored to their own work starting from a base recipe. Through demonstrations, discussion and hands-on testing, students will learn to read and follow glaze recipes, recognise the characteristics of a glaze, and explore how simple adjustments affect colour and surface.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

The Course in Detail

Shiny or matt? Runny or stiff? Bright or subtle colour? These glaze characteristics are not as difficult to control as it may seem.

Through step-by-step testing and careful observation, glaze making can open up a world of creative possibility and fascinating discovery to any ceramic maker.

Understanding why a glaze behaves as it does is just as important as knowing how to make it, helping potters to make informed decisions about the next stage of testing, and translate successful test-tile results onto finished pots. This course explores both the how and the why of this alchemic side of ceramics.

Over the course of the day, students will learn the basics of glaze chemistry and become familiar with some of the raw materials used to make ceramic glazes.

Through observation of a wide range of visual examples, group discussion and tutor demonstration, participants will learn to recognise and describe the characteristics of a glaze before carrying out their own practical tests with precision and confidence.

Following a demonstration of glaze mixing and testing, students will prepare a series of colour response tests by weighing and mixing raw materials to make a base glaze, adding colouring oxides, and applying to test tiles. A second series of tests will then explore how changing individual materials within a recipe can alter a glaze's surface character, providing a practical introduction to understanding and modifying glaze recipes.

About Grace

Grace Birkett Kenrick is a studio potter based in south London. She makes wheel-thrown, mostly functional stoneware from her zero-waste garden studio, where she also teaches throwing and glaze development courses.

Before returning to her hometown of London, Grace trained with traditional terracotta artisans in Barcelona, later studying ceramics at the Granada School of Art in Andalucía. During her time abroad, she developed a deep interest in the elemental nature of pottery, from atmospheric firings to working with wild clay, while developing her own expressive visual language through glaze making.

Her practice is driven by an ongoing exploration of ceramic materials, investigating how subtle shifts in clay, glaze and fire can transform the character of a pot. Through this process, she creates quietly expressive functional ware that celebrates the richness and complexity of ceramic surfaces.

Grace has recently completed exclusive ceramic commissions for St Barts Restaurant and the Chiltern Firehouse in London, and has exhibited work at the Turner Gallery.
